Before you begin, people often ask

Most of these come from messages readers have sent us. We've answered them as plainly as we can.

I don't know my exact birth time. Can I still get my chart?

Yes. Your year, month and day pillars don't depend on the hour, so most of your chart, including your Day Master, stays the same. Only the hour pillar needs the time. If you know roughly when you were born, enter your best guess; if you're torn between two hours, try both and see which one sounds more like you.

Why do you ask where I was born?

Because in Bazi the sun, not the clock, sets the hour. Your birth city lets us correct for longitude and for daylight saving time, which together can move your birth by an hour or more. Near the edge of a two-hour block, that difference decides your hour pillar.

I was born in January. Is my Chinese zodiac animal from the year before?

If you were born before the Start of Spring, yes. In Bazi the year doesn't turn on 1 January or at Lunar New Year, but at the Start of Spring (Lichun), around 4 February. Months turn the same way, at the exact moment of each solar term. So a birthday between 1 January and early February belongs to the year before, animal included.

I was born in the Southern Hemisphere. Does Bazi still work for me?

Yes. We calculate your pillars the classical way, from the solar terms, wherever you were born. Some teachers flip the months south of the equator; when we tested both on the charts of real people, flipping didn't describe them any better, so we kept the classical method. What we do adapt is the language: your full reading describes the seasons as you actually live them, so a January birthday in Sydney is a summer birthday.

Is my chart telling me my fate?

No. A chart describes the conditions you started with: your temperament, your natural strengths, the climate of each decade. It doesn't make your choices for you, and it can't see the effort you'll put in.

Why does the form ask for my gender?

For one calculation: the direction in which your ten-year Luck Cycles unfold. Your pillars and your Day Master are the same either way. If you're entering a chart for someone else, it's worth a second look before you continue.

Your chart is a seed, not a tree.
