What's Your Day Master? Bazi's 10 Personality Types, Explained

Your Day Master is the heart of your Bazi chart — the single character that defines your personality type. Find out which of the 10 Day Masters describes you, and what it means for love, work, and growth.

In the world of Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny), your Day Master (日主, Rì Zhǔ) is the single most important element that defines who you are at your core. Think of it as your cosmic DNA—the fundamental energy signature that shapes your personality, drives your decisions, and influences how you interact with everything and everyone around you.

While Western astrology focuses on sun signs and rising signs, Bazi practitioners look first to the Day Master to understand a person's essential nature. This ancient system has guided Chinese emperors, scholars, and families for over 3,000 years, and understanding your Day Master is the first step to unlocking its wisdom.

What Exactly is the Day Master?

The Heart of Your Bazi Chart

Your Bazi chart consists of Four Pillars—Year, Month, Day, and Hour—each containing a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. The Day Master is specifically the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar.

Here's how it appears in our free Bazi tool — the same layout you'll see when you enter your own birth details:

Year Month Day Hour
Ten God Seven Killings Eating God Day Master Indirect Resource
Heavenly Stem GengMetal BingFire
JiaWood ⭐
RenWater
Earthly Branch ShenMetal WuFire YinWood ZiWater
Hidden Stems 庚 Geng ● Metal
壬 Ren ● Water
戊 Wu ● Earth
丁 Ding ● Fire
己 Ji ● Earth
甲 Jia ● Wood
丙 Bing ● Fire
戊 Wu ● Earth
癸 Gui ● Water

In this example, Jia Wood (甲) in the Day column — highlighted in gold — is the Day Master. This single character tells us that the person's core nature is like a towering tree: ambitious, upright, and always striving toward the light. Notice how every other pillar carries a label like Seven Killings, Eating God, or Indirect Resource — those are the Ten Gods, and they only make sense once you know who "you" are in the chart. The colours show each element at a glance: green for Wood, red for Fire, yellow for Earth, grey for Metal, blue for Water.

Why is the Day Master Called "The Self"?

In classical Bazi texts, the Day Master is referred to as "日元" (Rì Yuán) or "我" (Wǒ), meaning "the self" or "I." This isn't just poetic language—it's a fundamental principle of Bazi analysis:

  • Everything in your chart is analyzed in relation to your Day Master
  • Other elements become resources, supporters, challenges, or outputs based on how they interact with your Day Master
  • Your favorable and unfavorable elements are determined by what your Day Master needs for balance

The classical text Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) states: "The Day Master is the foundation of the chart. To analyze a chart, you must first identify the Day Master, then examine what generates it, what it generates, what controls it, and what it controls."

How to Find Your Day Master

The Traditional Method

Calculating your Day Master traditionally requires:

  1. Converting your birth date to the Chinese Ganzhi (干支) calendar
  2. Looking up the specific Heavenly Stem for your birth day
  3. Understanding the 60-day Jiazi cycle

This process can be complex because the Chinese calendar doesn't align directly with the Western calendar.

The Easy Way: Use a Bazi Calculator

The simplest method is to use a reliable Bazi calculator. Try AstroBazi's free Bazi Calculator to instantly discover your Day Master. Just enter:

How Day Master Strength Affects You

Your Day Master's strength is just as important as its type. A Day Master can be:

Strong Day Master

  • Born in season that supports your element
  • Surrounded by supporting elements in the chart
  • Tends toward self-reliance, independence, sometimes stubbornness
  • Needs elements that challenge or drain excess energy

Weak Day Master

  • Born in season that weakens your element
  • Surrounded by draining or controlling elements
  • Tends toward cooperation, flexibility, sometimes dependency
  • Needs elements that support and strengthen

How Your Day Master Relates to the Other Elements

Every other element in your chart — and every person you meet — falls into one of five relationships with your Day Master. These are the building blocks of Bazi analysis, and once you see them, the chart starts to read like a story:

Your Day Master Resource
nurtures you
Peer
same as you
Output
you express
Wealth
you control
Officer
controls you
Wood (甲乙) Water Wood Fire Earth Metal
Fire (丙丁) Wood Fire Earth Metal Water
Earth (戊己) Fire Earth Metal Water Wood
Metal (庚辛) Earth Metal Water Wood Fire
Water (壬癸) Metal Water Wood Fire Earth

Reading the table: find your Day Master row, and you'll see which element plays each role in your chart and your relationships. For example, if you're a Wood Day Master, then Water is your Resource (wisdom and support), Wood is your Peer (siblings and rivals), Fire is your Output (your creativity and voice), Earth is your Wealth (what you build and control), and Metal is your Officer (the discipline and pressure that shapes you).

So which elements are "good" for you?

Here's the part most popular guides get wrong: there's no universally lucky element. It depends entirely on your Day Master's strength (which we covered above):

  • A strong Day Master already has plenty of Resource and Peer support — what it really needs is Output, Wealth, or Officer to channel that excess energy into achievement. For a strong Wood person, Fire (Output) and Metal (Officer) are often the keys to growth, even though they "drain" or "control" you.
  • A weak Day Master lacks foundation — it needs Resource and Peer to build strength before it can take on output, wealth, or pressure. For a weak Wood person, more Water (Resource) and Wood (Peer) come first; piling on Fire or Metal would burn you out.

This is why two people with the same Day Master can have completely different "favorable elements" — and why a generic compatibility chart based only on Day Master is a starting point, not a final answer.
